The smoke cleared from the battlefield to reveal 3 Space Marine Dreadnoughts surrounded by wreckage. The heat was obvious, as the air seemed to shake around these venerable Battle Brothers. Strewn across the ground around them were the hollow, smouldering carcasses of other dreadnoughts, some barely recognisable after the sheer pounding they had taken.

Of the three left standing, one was a Fursioso of the Blood Angel chapter, one a gigantic Space Wolf monster covered in battle trophies. The third had one arm missing, and was covered in battle scars that threatened to cover up the bright yellow Imperial Fist colours he wore.

The twisted metal wreckage that covered the ground was a mix of Space Marine Dreadnought wrecks and shattered remains of Necron fighters. Space Marine Heroes shared the dust with the robotic killers that had emerged from the great Pyamid that stood in the distance.

The war, though it had started only a few short weeks previously, had been full of fierce and savage confrontations, the machines pitted against each other by higher forces with no thought for consequences.

The Space Marines had taken Dreadnoughts from every Chapter they could, and the original army was an impressive site to behold, hundreds upon hundreds of dreadnoughts lined up, each bearing their own unique chapter colours and insignia, each holding a Space Marine within, a veteran who had lost his life in the service of the Imperium and been given the chance to fight for mankind once again as the living part of a massive, well armed and armoured machine of war.

Though the planet was a deathworld, unsuitable for human life after thousands of years of heavy industry had robbed the planet of its atmosphere. However, the High Lords of Terra had deemed it tactically imperative that the Imperium should keep control of the planet, and when the Necron pyramid first landed, the most powerful men in the Imperium decided the only way to take the planet back was to send in the biggest guns of all!
